maybe you had the ption to download and install important updates automatically. i dunno.. just trying to help
You probably experienced a kernel panic, pretty much the equivalent to Window's BSOD. It does happen at times, but it shouldn't happen too often. I wouldn't worry about it for now. If this behavior continues, you might have a problem though.

Did you try repair permission? This happened to my G4 MDD before and I was advised to do repair permission. It fixed the problem but after a few months, it started happening again so often that I eventually did a clean install.

JP, it may have been caused by one of the recent software updates that requires a long press of the start button that you can only let go when you see the lights blinking. Try to manually download and reinstall this software update.

did you upgrade hardware? kernel panics are usually caused by hardware problem (faulty/incompatible RAM,, etc.). another culprit could be 1 of your external hardware (a usb hub perhaps?). try isolating each.
of course, try repairing permissions first.

no hardware upgrade yet. still the way i got it. when i tried repairing disk permissions no problem showed up. already did the upgrade on where you need to restart. well i'll it doesn't happen often. as i've said only the second time and the gap is more than a week. i'll update the thread when the problem persists. thanks for all the insights. at least i know now it's something that shouldn't be worried about too much if it doesn't occur regularly.
