    Default Resets and power offs

When your mac or pc hangs, is it bad for the hard disks if you press the reset or power button? I mean, if done often?

    Hi Dvsadvocate,

I think what Rdelrio meant was you could do a "Force Quit by pressing ctrl+apple+esc... just like ctrl+alt+del (in wintels)"

In response to your original post:

    1. If your system indeed hangs, and Force Quit doesn't work, you really have no choice but to power down and/or hard Restart your system anyway, right?

    2. I don't think frequent hard Restarts/Power downs harm the hard disk hardware nowadays. What you should be worried is loss of data, or worse, System corruption rendering you unable to boot your Mac. In this case, your only solution is rebooting to an external drive and recovering your files and/or reinstalling the System on your internal hard drisk. Again, I don't think your hard disk will be physically harmed.

However, if you are indeed experiencing frequent hanging (followed by hard Restarting) then you should try to find out what's causing the symptoms.

Ex. Your Mac is in a hot environment -> hard disk overheats -> System Hangs. High environmental temperatures can definitely destroy hard disks.

    Hope this helps,
    Christian
