Default RAM upgrade for Intel iMac

the Intel imacs come with a 512MB PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 RAM. is this fixed? or, does this occupy one of the two SODIMM slots?

    if i plan to add 1GB RAM, would it be adviseable if i get 2 x 512MB instead of a 1 x 1GB module?

    thanks in advance.

    From an Apple support document:

Depending on the configuration of the MacBook you purchased, both memory slots may already be full. The maximum amount of memory you can install in your MacBook is 2 GB (using 1 GB DIMMs in both memory slots).

Note: For best performance, fill both memory slots, installing an equal memory module in each slot.

    EDIT:
Oops, my bad. I didn't read your post properly. I picked this up from an Apple support document about the Intel iMacs. Apparently, it doesn't matter if the memory sticks in the two slots are of different capacities.

The iMac (Early 2006) computer has two SDRAM slots in the bottom of the computer. The iMac ships from the factory with at least 512 MB of DDR2 SDRAM installed into the top slot. (The computer may come with more RAM in the top slot or RAM in the bottom slot, depending on how you ordered the computer from Apple.)

The maximum amount of RAM you can install in the iMac is 2 GB total (a 1 GB SO-DIMM in each of the two slots).

The stock 512MB occupies one slot. You can add either a single 512MB for a total of 1GB, or a single 1GB for a total of 1.5GB. You don't need matching pairs of memory on the iMac.

Hey! this is great news! You mean I can just buy 1GB ram? Can you direct me to a page on how this upgrading is done? I have read Macworlds RAM upgrade on a macbook and did so perfectly. Now, I want to upgrade my iMacs RAM.
