don't forget to add the cost of the display to your total cost.

NoisyCricket: if you can find a brand-new (or even 2nd hand) 1st gen. single-proc 1.8GHz Power Mac G5, that's a better machine than the current single-proc 1.8GHz Power Mac G5.

    1st gen.
    FSB: 900MHz
    Stock RAM: 512MB (2 x 256MB)
RAM slots: 8 (8GB max RAM)
    HDD: 160GB SATA
    Optical drive: 4x SuperDrive
Video card: 64MB nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
    PCI slots: PCI-X (2 x 100MHz; 1 x 133MHz)
    Ports: 1 x FW800; 2 x FW400; 3 x USB 2.0

    Current
FSB: 600MHz (same as that of the 1.8GHz iMac G5)
    Stock RAM: 256MB (2 x 128MB! WTF? Uberweak)
RAM slots: 4 (4GB max RAM)
    HDD: 80GB SATA
    Optical drive: 8x SuperDrive
Video card: 64MB nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
    PCI slots: vanilla PCI (3 x 33MHz)
    Ports: 1 x FW800; 2 x FW400; 3 x USB 2.0

And whatever you do, don't buy RAM from the Apple Store. ;-)

If I were in the market for a new Mac, I'd seriously consider this over the iMac G5. What's the advantage over the iMac? Expandability.

    What Eric said, expandability.

    Current 1.8GHz Power Mac G5
    - 4GB max RAM, dual-channel memory interface
    - upgradeable video card
    - PCI slots
    - space for 2 internal hard drives
    - Firewire 800
    - Gigabit ethernet
    - ability to use your preferred CRT or LCD monitor/s

    1.8GHz iMac G5
    - 2GB max RAM, single-channel
    - video card soldered on the mobo
    - no PCI slots
    - space for only 1 internal hard drive
    - No FW800
    - 10/100 ethernet
    - built-in LCD display

thanks for all your input, Henj (again), man. Weird..

I was at Senco this afternoon. Just realized that all this time, they were just across the street pala

They have the lowest prices so far (believe it or not), and if you upgrade parts like your mem and your hd.. they can absorb the original ones... COOL!

The Product Consultant there said every 6 months... that's about the time it takes Apple to make their current models faster, better, cheaper.

I don't know if I can wait another 6 months hahahaha
