    Default My naked Mac Mini

Bought the 1.42 Mac Mini 3 weeks ago in the US for my son and decided on getting the mouse and keyboard locally. Imagine my surprise when I found out that the wired Apple Keyboard here costs P4500!!! And the wired Mouse P3500!!!

Which is why my Mac Mini is 'naked'. Still in its box, untouched... NO WAY AM I PAYING THAT KIND OF MONEY FOR A KEYBOARD AND MOUSE!!! What a ripoff! Even at 100% tax, (P3000 for the KB and P1500 for the mouse), it's a bit high already but still bearable to put a margin on, but 4500 and 3500???? Sonofagun!

The Rockwell store was trying to sell me a Samsung LCD + KB + mouse bundle for 25k. Who are they kidding???? CRAZY I SAY!!!

Good thing I'm leaving again this week. Gonna get myself the stuff abroad. I support business and all but this is simply an example of poor business practice.... Man, that's taking advantage of consumers who can't source abroad.

At the local price of the Mac Mini + the bundle they were trying to sell me, we're looking at a 65k minimum investment for a new setup. Again, who are they kidding? Overpriced I say...

The keyboard and mouse you buy dont necessarily have to be the Apple ones, there are a lot of cheaper alternatives.

well, that is quite true, if you compare the prices here and in the US (with tax), the US stillis the cheapest

Not necessarily... remember all the prices quoted do not include Sales Tax.

im not so sure with apple accessories. but when i was then sourcing for my first ever ibook, i compared the US price and the local dealer's price. i paid around 10k more, but that already includes a 3-year apple protection plan and the convenience of just driving around 20km from my place to have it check.

again, im not so sure if my theory applies with apple accessories. hope you can enlighten me here cause in the near future, i know i will be getting a desktop mac. and since im considering getting the mini (which does not come with kb and mouse), as a fanatic i would definitely get APPLE kb and mouse as well!

Sheeeesh.... at those prices, I'd buy the bluetooth wireless Apple keyboard that was priced at 5000. Even then.. that is a SICK amount of money to spend on a keyboard. Luckily I had a friend along with me that kept me from buying it... hehe.

That's why some people would rather get an eMac than a Mac mini. At a little over 50k (combo drive) you get everything you need. Of course, it's not as appealing as a Mac mini but it's a good deal for someone who's getting into the Mac world. The Mac mini becomes truly affordable if you already have the other components necessary to complete your system.

There are other more economical alternatives to the Apple branded keyboard & mouse and just because they're less expensive doesn't mean they don't perform as well. You could try the Logitech keyboard & mouse combinations. Aside from being cordless they're optical too. Unfortunately, the high end models don't have Mac support. If you intend to buy the items separately then the Logitech V500 Cordless Notebook Mouse would look great paired with the Mac mini.

Tried to look for a good keyboard at Mega, but the only thing that came close to a mini compatible would be those USB keyboards made by genius that looks like a laptop keyboard.

If I opt for a non Mac native keyboard, how will I control the speaker volume?

Also, the stark mouse by MS is nice, but the button is on the sides so my son can't use it.

I would have wanted to buy Apple branded stuff since i maintain several systems already. And would like my son to get the whole 'Apple' feel. It's his first Mac! I have a lot of the Microsoft and Logitech keyboards lying around since my old PC days... Actually just bought for my HTPC a M$ Wireless Comfort Edition Optical Desktop.

And, remember the KVMs Apple has been trying to say that would be easy to run 2 computers? Well, I use KVMs and a 2 PC setup (PS/2) costs P2500 already. You go 4 or more and it proportionately increases. PS/2 to USB converters won't work here, I've tried... A USB KVM costs P4500 for a 2 computer setup. Add around P1k more if you want sound with that.

Besides, how would you 'eject' the CD with a PC keyboard?

Mapping the F12 key would be too complicated for my son to understand in one go (though i'm sure he could, i wouldn't want to spoil the experience for him).

    Damn the local prices!

That's my initial review of it here. If one is gonna insist on all Apple gear to outfit a mini here, it's not quite the bargain.

I just hope the mini takes off and lots of aftermarket manufacturers follow suit like the iPod.
