How much ram is needed when using Final cut pro HD
My father in law is using Final cut pro HD with his Power Mac G5.
He currently has 1.5GB of ram
He wants to upgrade to 3GB of ram
If he does upgrade to 3GB of ram, will he even notice the difference? Is it worth it?
Thanks,
James

1.5 GB of ram is enough.
3 GB is more than enough.
I'm currently using 2GB and it's blazing fast.
One can never have enough ram.

Would there be any noticeable difference by ugrading to 2GB or 3GB?
If one can "never have enough ram" then I guess its worth doing the upgrade?
What is the point of diminishing returns?

In an article entitled "Creating Video with iMovie" in PC Magazine (Philippine edition p.60) , written by a certain Adel Gabot (anybody know this guy?)
And I quote:
Additional RAM also helps, up to a point; any amount of RAM over 1GB will provide little or no benefit.

I have 1GB on my Powerbook and Final Cut works fast enough for me. I'll gladly swap for your father-in-law's gear though.

1.5GB is plenty for FCP. FCP performance is very CPU-bound, and there won't be any performance increase if you go from say, 2GB of RAM up to 8GB.

There will be negligible difference in FCP performance. But it's worth it if he uses more than one heavy-hitter app at the same time (ex. if he's got FCP, Photoshop, After Effects, etc. open at the same time).
But if he's got the budget, I say go for it.

... unless he plans to edit HDV on it. for HDV 2gig is the minimum.

yep! 1gb is enough unless you go the HDV way... :-)

1gb is enoughi guess if you edit so and so projects. unless you edit maybe an hour or so if video then maybe you can feel the difference a bit and editing hdv in it. the important thing is that you have a good cpu to back you up.
