G5 woes (caveat emptor)
I got my G5 a couple of months ago. A couple of weeks after getting my unit, I used my firewire ports for the first time, to find out that they were defective (causing my G5 to restart). I brought it to my dealer on Sept 14, and they diagnosed it with a defective logic board. They took delivery of a replacement logic board, which also turned to be defective.
*Sidenote: What are the chances of getting 2 defective logic boards? My dealer says that 30% percent of Macs delivered into the country are defective. Either she misquoted that fact, I misunderstood her, or Apple's got serious quality control issues.
Finally, today, went over to my dealer to pick up my G5 after it being installed with it's 3rd logic board. When I got there, the unit was running, the firewire ports were functioning, etc etc. It all seemed good, and they were copying back my files and installing my software.
I take it home, plug it in, and right after that part where the you see the gray apple on the silver background, with that little rotating thing at the bottom, my screen hangs at a blue background. It doesn't even get to the part where the OS boots. What the heck is wrong with it?
It's been a month and a half since I've had this unit, and I've only used it for 2 or so weeks. It's spent half the time at the dealers getting repaired. I feel I've gotten a lemon and I want my dealer to replace the whole unit. Is it possible to make this demand? Or even, do I have legal ground to make that demand?

Ey Miguel,
The logic board to my older 17" Powerbook was also replaced thirce. This was a common problem with the Rev.A model. The other 17" users on the Apple discussion board were having the same problems as I and had their logic boards also replaced. So I took the incident as a factory defect.
Now I have a Rev. B 17 Powerbook and its been running smoothly. I think Apple has really been having some serious quality control issues recently.
Have you checked for other documented incidents similar to yours on the Apple discussion boards? Becasue if it isn't, then you probabaly got a lemon. Have the machine replaced already, tell them it was DOA.
Have you checked your power source?
Maybe the current at your home just zaps the G5's board when you plug in it?
Hope you find a solution.

Jofab, I'm calling first thing tomorrow morning. I was hoping 3 would be the magic number. Thanks!
Tom, I think I've been very nice, considering. I'll update on this thread asap

G5? Are you talking about the brand new iMac G5 or the PMac G5? I plan to get the former this year, probably this December. If and when I do, I better check all the ports, hard discs, everything. Man. This is a bummer.
Why the heck do we get the 30% defective macs?

I'm talking about the tower Dual 2Ghz G5. As to the 30% defective Macs, I was told it had to do with the units getting knocked around during shipping... something to that effect.

Wow, bad trip! Mas "solid" pa yung design ng tower dual G5 so it really shouldn't rock as much as a "flimsy" 2" thick iMac.. yikes..
Would anyone know how much the 3year AppleCare plan is? Definitely going to get that..

That's a bummer. I was planning to get a G5 this year and now I'm a bit worried from where to buy it.
Out of curiosity where did you get you mac?
