    Default Dead Power Mac

My Power Mac was sleeping and we had a power outage. When the power came back on, it wouldn't turn on anymore. When I press the power button the light just goes and fades out. What could be wrong?

Btw... the Power Mac is a MDD 1.25Ghz with a sonnet SATA card.

Try resetting the PMU (press down on the PMU button for a few seconds). On an MDD Power Mac, it's located in the upper left corner of the mobo, right below the connector for the secondary IDE channel (marked with a tiny "PMU" printed on the motherboard).

You mean this was plugged straingt into the wall without an AVR? P500 gets you a cheap AVR, next time there is a surge the AVR gets fried (if ever) and not your Mac. That's its job.

Try plugging your Mac into different outlets or run an extension cable to it. Check all conections are properly plugged.

Is this still under warranty? If it is check with your reseller.

Actually it was plugged into an AVR. But oddly, the AVR is still working. I'll try the PMU reset when i get home.

Or better yet, buy a UPS. AVR + battery backup in one. Your Mac will thank you. :-)

A 650VA UPS (I prefer APC brand) will be great for an MDD Power Mac + peripherals.

Any idea what brand is good? I'd want to get an APC but they have the funny plugs at the back (like the one's in the PSU) so all I can plug in is my computer.

You can't go wrong with APC.

The Back-UPS ES series comes with the standard power outlets. P2,100 for the 500VA model (PC Express). More than enough for the MDD Power Mac (360W), a monitor, external hard drives, a printer, a router, etc. etc. Around 10 minutes of backup power (enough time to save your work and shut down your Mac). ;-)

That's the same thing that destroy my PM Powersupply. Good thing it's repairable. Now I'm using a afforadable and reliable UPS from Powercom, less than 3k if I remember right. No funny plug like in some APC models.

I just tried the PMU reset and it's alive again! Will look into the UPS in a few days. Will the 500VA one be enough? My Power Mac has three internal HD's, two optical drives, one external HD and two LCD monitors (23" and 17&quot. I also plan on pluging the DSL modem and Router into the UPS.

    Thanks

Right now, I've got the following plugged into my 650VA UPS: an MDD Power Mac w/ 2 internal hard drives and 2 optical drives; a 19" CRT (which draws more power than both your LCD monitors combined, hehe), and an external DVD burner. For your setup, I suggest you go for a 600+VA model just to be sure. ;-)
