Apple Computer on Wednesday confirmed reports of video-display problems in the new iMacs that are based on Intel processors.

A Mac enthusiast site had ( http://www.techweb.com/wire/hardware/179101558 ) reported that in playing video on Apple's Front Row media browser, some iMacs showed random horizontal lines, ghosting, video tearing and other problems.

"Apple is aware of this issue and is looking into it," the company said in an email. "If a customer has any technical issues, they should contact AppleCare." AppleCare is the company's support unit.

The site, ConsumerMachine ( http://www.consumermachine.com/ ) said the problems could best be described as "faint and intermittent patches of whatever graphics are on the screen appearing in random locations (tearing)," the site said. "Aside from the Front Row menu system, these problems also persist when viewing movies or DVDs through the Front Row interface."

The problems did not appear when playing video through Apple's Quicktime Player, but users reported that the display troubles occurred when "alt-tabbing between apps or during certain tasks in iMovie."

"Numerous user software reinstalls have established that the problem is likely not software related, placing the blame on the ATI Radeon X1600 video card," the site said.

ATI Technologies, maker of the video card, did not respond to a request for comment.

Apple introduced an Intel-based iMac and notebook in January during the Macworld conference in San Francisco. The company is moving its computers from PowerPC chips from IBM and Freescale Semiconductor to the Intel platform.

Happily... I haven't seen this after 4 days of playing video games, and watching DVDs.

Only 'problem' i have is that two of the programs i love aren't optimized for the iMacTel yet. hehe

Got 2 Rev. A iMac G5s, one was D.O.A. and was immediately replaced and the other one needs logic board replacement (though I'm still using it) courtesy of Apple Care.

The "video tearing" problems seen on Intel iMacs when using Front Row is being attributed to a faulty software build (8G1171). The latest build revision (8G1172) fixes the video tearing problem in Front Row.
When the latest batch of iMacs with software build 8G1172 (which is free of the problem) was installed with the 8G1171 build, the video tearing problem showed up.

Mac OS 10.4.5 (build 8G1454) update is said to fix the video tearing and other related video problems.

bought an intel imac 2 weeks ago. hasn't had any problems, video display wise.

i have updated to build 8g1454 when the update came out, nada problems where video is concerned before or after the update.

what i do have a problem with is with my keyboard. not a day goes by when the keyboard doesn't hang up especially when using camino and ym. i had already moved the keyboard to a different usb port. nada change, although it became less frequent. the logs say the usb resets itself for some reason. anyway, the mighty mouse and my ipod 5g don't experience any problems on any usb port. i'm still watching it.

though this is my first mac, best display i've got and i have two pcs at home and more in my office. i love this display and the video capabilities of this machine.

all in all rev. A isn't so bad but having bugs in the system is a fact of every bleeding edge gear. doesn't change the fact that i love my intel imac

    cheers.
