whew!! must be a pretty good brand and to think i bought mine for 5k (smart-drive combo with usb 2.0 and firewire).
well from what i heard, its not really on the look cuz once you drop those cases, kiss your HD goodbye
performance for me, using mine is bearable.. i back up my files before i go to sleep so the next day, its done and doesn't get in the way of me using my ibook.
if your aiming to get one with firewire cable/usb/or both, be sure to double check if the firewire powers the external hdd while its plugged in, i wasn't able to check on that aspect when i bought it, but luckily mine powers the external HD when its plugged to my ibook via firewire.
Good Luck in the search!!!

Hey Ralph! Why not consider buying an internal disk drive with an external firewire enclosre. There is a thread that talks about it. Find it here. This will save you lots of money.
Don't only look for a higher capacity drive (i.e. 120GB) but also one that is fast. Go for the 7200 RPM.

actually, it will depend on your use. if your going for back-ups only, no need to get a 7200 rpm hdd. just get the 5400 rpm at a lower cost. what's more important is to get a highter cached hdd. at least 8mb cache for a 100+ gb capacity hdd.
you also need to decide if your getting a 3.5 or a 2.5" hdd. the 3.5" is the same size as to your desktop hdd, while the 2.5" is the laptop size. of course, the smaller sized hdd comes more expensive. if your main purpose is to back-up files, which you can do either at home or in the office, get a 3.5" hdd. for other uses like saving files from the net, or transferring files from other people's computer, it is more convenient to carry a flash disc rather than a 2.5". in short, get the 3.5" hdd
