USB external Hard Disk ?
Greetings!
I recently bought a TRAVELSTAR (IBM) portable hard disk for my MAC and one for my brother for his PC. The one for his PC worked whereas mine cannot be detected. I then returned the hard disk to the store where i got it from and according to research the USB port of my notebook has a low voltage ... so i have to get an drive with a higher voltage.
WHen I went back to that store they offered me the same capacity (40 gigs) but at a much higher price... tsk tsk... the TRAVELSTAR was 40 gigs @ 4k whereas the new one (smaller in size and higher in voltage) was 7.7k.
Any tips on where I can get the best deals? I am looking for at least 60-80 gigs... more would be good.
=)

hi! if you are going to travel, the best place to buy it is in singapore. i bought mine for 5k with casing. its a 2.5HDD 40gb fujitsu. the firewire one was i think +1k or so.
if you going to buy it here, im not so sure. i have been looking for one also for my mom and maybe another one for me. i find it too expensive.

Low voltage? High voltage? Could it be that it's a USB 1.1 drive as opposed to USB 2.0? If yes, stay away.
If it's still branded as an IBM product, then it must be an old drive (a very old drive). IBM sold its storage division to Hitachi back in 2002 (everything's labeled as Hitachi drives after that). And Hitachi doesn't sell external Travelstars now (only the bare drives).
Try contacting Ditoy and ask him if he still has stocks of 60GB or 80GB laptop drives. Then just buy an external 2.5" Firewire enclosure, put everything together, and there's your external Firewire hard drive. ;-)

If your Mac is a 15" AlBook, then a USB enclosure will not work properly. Need extra power they say!??
USB 2.0 enclosure will work properly on other Mac models except this 15" AlBook (i don't know why???)
Better to buy a FireWire enclosure...
