which to upgrade 1st? RAM or HD
im asking this for a friend of mine who just switched but is now too broke to get a DSL connection. she got the most basic 1.2 ibook with BT. 256RAM, 30HD. her use is graphic design - print, web, flash, photoshop, presentations. The HD is tight as it is with the software alone. so everythings movin' along fine but you know it could be better...
her question is in the subject line. so which is it? just so she knows which to get as soon as she manages to find some extra cash.

Definitely get more RAM first. Photoshop is really a memory hungry application and 256MB is definitely not enough. The more RAM she can afford the better!

Yup, upgrade the RAM first. An additional 256MB would be good, 512MB much better (for a total of 768MB). If your friend upgraded the HD first, she won't be able to fully appreciate her Mac if it was sluggish because of too little RAM.

RAM! it's the most cheapest and has more noticeable improvement in overall performance.

RAM is defintely what's she's going to need for graphics work but she's going to need extra HDD space pretty soon as well with the usually large files sizes of graphic work. But an external HDD is an alternative to changing the iBook's HDD altogether.

this is a no-brainer. RAM--you'll use it up sooner and faster than your HD.

Yep, even a 256mb ram will yield a huge improvement if several programs are run at the same time...a second-hand memory costs less than P2k if you bargain properly.
Hard disk upgrade to 80gb is possible at a total cost of around P6k if Wulf still has the drives available, and Ynzal does the installation for you.

I'm wondering about this one: Is there a specific type of memory module for the PB? Is it okay if I buy any type of module that says PC2700 200-pin at any computer shop, or should i stick to getting it at an Apple store?
