    Default TiBook hinges

Both hinges of my Titanium Powerbook gave up on me today. Well, actually for the last 6 months, only the left hinge was sort of semi-broken. But today, when I opened the lid, the right one gave way all the way! Bad trip!

I called Apple Center to find out if they can repair it and the guy on the other end said they'll have to replace the whole LCD panel which costs P60K! Super bad trip!

He said an option would be to buy some hinges off of the web but I would have to be the one to install it myself. They won't do it coz its kinda tricky.

So now, the lid of my TiBook is just hanging on; it still stands upright but I can't move it much because it either falls halfway back or partway front.

What else can I do? I don't have Apple Care so that's the challenge.

ouch! ya, the lcd's cost that much, as i had to replace mine from when i dropped my laptop a year ago.

Your best bet is to get the hinges form e bay

    http://search.ebay.com/powerbook-hinges_W0QQfromZR8QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQfsprZ1

I guess if you do it yourself and mess it up ganun rin, you'll have to buy a new lcd anyway, so it's worth a try.

Good Luck! and let us know how it goes, I still worry about my hinges breaking so any info about this will be very helpful.

yup, it sure is a major pain!

Won't I just end up spending more if I get the hinges from eBay and try to do it myself and then botch the whole thing that I would need to buy a new LCD anyway?

For the price of an LCD, I can get a new Centrino laptop. It may not be a Mac but it'll do the job (did I just say something blasphemous here?).

Thanks for the tip, though. I'll consider it.

Although Apple tried to remedy the problem in the later models, the hinges and paint had always been the TiBook's bane. It is probably the reason why they're now using aluminium. I was lucky Apple replaced my unit for free when I cracked the hinge after I accidentally dropped my TiBook.
I would agree with Toto. With care you can't screw it up more than it already is.

Hirap lang talaga, because you'll have to pry open the enclosure of the whole top lid (lcd). This is why the service centers won't touch it.

Ok, looking at this link again,

    http://www.mcj.de/MAIN_PowerBookG4hinge.html

It's really going to be a pain in the behind to fix.

yikes mike.. that happened to me awhile back when i still had my tibook..

both hinges gave up and the LCD just fell on its back on the last day of my warranty (how clever of apple hahahahhaa) and i was almost in tears hehe

good thing they replaced the whole LCD under warranty at no cost.. it pays talaga to have that applecare for times like these..

for 60k, go for the ibook na lang.. wag na yun peecee na yan. baka masira or crash lagi and now thats really waste of money na :P

Now you're scaring the living daylights out of me...I have a TiBook

Peter, when you say "Although Apple tried to remedy the problem in the later models do you mean they have fixed it or they gave up fixing it...I have the 867 MHz version which I think were the last TiBook updates...

Will do a Google on it too though...

Right about the iBook, Kai! Still, the funds are not forthcoming so its out of the question at this point.

I'll just get a nice looking "pang-tungkod" so that the screen will still stand while I'm using it. It hasn't keeled over....yet.

The guys here at the office are kidding me to just turn my TiBook into a desktop so I don't need to open and close the lid....funny guys, but not a big help....

Too late to get Applecare now....

Nakita ko nga! I don't think DIY is an option for me. Pero ang galing nung gumawa.

Well, I'll have to make do for the time being. Thanks a lot of the inputs, guys!!!

    Unhinged,
