Default SWITCHED! (Formerly About to Switch!)

Hey guys this is my first post ever. I'm so much looking forward to being a part of this great community of mac users.

About a month ago something bizzare hit me and I found myself wanting a mac. Anyway to make a long story short I am eagerly awaiting the results of my loan application. If all goes well, by next week I should have my own powerbook. I'm very excited.

Currently on my PC I do a lot of graphic design work on Photoshop as well as webdesign on Frontpage. I store & play with all sorts of multimedia files (photos, music & video). I also extensively use all Microsoft Office applications. I also use the PC for amateur vocal recordings etc and do look forward to dabble in video editing very soon.

Aside from a 15" Powerbook I am also looking at a similarly priced HP Pavilion Laptop which runs a 3.2 GHz Pentium IV processor with Hyperthreading technology (actually it's cheaper by 20K).

Do you think at 1.5GHz the powerbook can handle all my multimedia work and then leave room for growth in the future?

By the way if anyone is interested I started a blog to document my transition to mac. Its at http://pc2mac.blogspot.com!

While I'm waiting do I need to consider anything else before I make the big switch?

Welcome to PhilMUG! The 1.5GHz 15" PowerBook should serve your needs nicely. Even I edit videos and burn DVDs on my 867MHz 12" PowerBook. Just remember to install as much RAM as you can afford, it'll make all the difference.

For multimedia file? Lots of RAM and an external HDD. Good Luck.

from the old philmug to the new, I've been lurking eversince.
when I got my T1 15 PB I didn't have much of a problem switching from windows thanks to the helpful posts here at philmug. so far it's been a very good investment for me. so good, in fact, i got one for my wife.:P
I still use windows at work, but do most of my multimedia work on my PB including video.
enjoy your future PB it will be worth the wait.

    Welcome Cyberprince!

Don't worry about the 1.5Ghz PB, I'm using the same machine for even video editing as well as 3D animations, it works flawlessly!

Running both Motion and Maya in near realtime (depends on size of project ofcourse)... although not comparable to the G5 Powermacs, the performance is quite surprizing on a laptop. Just add 1GB of RAM or more as well as remember to opt for the 128MB display card if you're planning to run softwares like Motion on it.

    Good luck!!!

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome. It's not over till its over and I still have to find out about my loan application. I look forward to this week and am praying for the best.

I've read through almost everything on the mobile Mac section and have took down some notes like things to ask when I get the unit, things to look out for etc.

I have also looked into things to get like a power sleeve and a new backpack, a USB mouse. I just hope that all this enthusiasm doesn't end in disappointment.
