Sounds like you have a problem with the RAM.
Try these couple of steps first.
1. reset the PMU. hold down the following keys for at least 5 seconds-- ctrl+option+shift+power button.
2. reset PRAM: hold down the following keys while powering up. Do not let go until you hear the chime at least three times-- option+cmd (apple key)+p+r.
Let us know asap if it works. If it doesn't, post again and we'll move to the next step.
Good luck.

Help! My powerbook just stays at the grey start-up screen with the apple logo with the swirl underneath it.
Tried PMU and zapping the pram to no avail.
Recent history:
1. I just had a VDATA 512mb DDR 333 PC2700 ram installed the day before.
2. Tried it yesterday and it was fine.
3. Left it on awhile ago(screensaver mode) at home and when i came back i felt the computer was particularly slow and the fans(i think, or perhaps another sound) were louder than usual.
4. So i thought of shuutting it down and restarting my pb. When i tried to shut it down it just hanged during the blue screen.
5. Made a manual restart and ended up with the grey screen.
*after zapping the PRAM took awhile to go to the blue screen with the mouse cursor.
I occasionally perform repair permissions fyi.
Any help willl be very much appreciated!

Try this:
Pop in the CD/DVD OS X installer and boot from it by holding down C. When you get to the installer screen, click on the Apple menu on the upper left corner to go to Disk Utility. Verify and repair your HD.
Or try taking out the RAM module to see if it runs without it. Could be a bad module.

I don't have the necessary tools to get the new ram out. But just in case it's the ram which is causing the problems, what are my options?

I guess your only option is to have the RAM replaced. Try repairing your HD first. Good luck.

True enough its the HD that had the problem. I needed the help from Powermac center since i needed an external hd to archive my data which set me back P1500. Did a clean install of tiger and now its up and running. thanks kenneth.
