Usually HD that are about to die can still be mounted and data recovered before officially going kaput. Is it a consistent metalic sound that you hear?
If you have another mac, perhaps you can still mount. Attach a 6 to 6 pin firewire cable to another mac. Startup your powerbook while pressing T to put it in targetdisk mode. It should mount on the other mac, if not, do it repeatedly till it mounts. I believe there's still a good chance to get your data.

mods, question please. in this case, is it okay to try repairing the disk by booting from the cd? my OS 9 crashed a few months ago in my old iBook, and allan of LMK just booted in the disk, and nothing was erased, and it worked fine all the way na.

If the hard drive is physically damaged, data recovery/drive repair using apps like DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, or Apple's Disk Utility is nearly impossible since accessing the drive will only aggravate the damage. If you're lucky, you may be able to backup some or all of the files before the drive becomes completely "dead".
But if the problem is limited to the drive directory, etc., then booting off your OS X CD to repair the drive using Disk Utility (or booting off a DiskWarrior or TTP 4 CD) will oftentimes be enough to repair the damage. I reckon this is what happened to your hard drive before. :-)

thanks for the help guys. I've brought my mac to Ynzal and they are trying to retieve my data but from the sounds of it, it seems grim. Is there a place in manila that can disassemble the drive and try to recover the data?
Is that even possible?
