\"Picky\" iBook G4??
Hey guys i just got my new 12" ibook G4 last week, and did some major work on transfering my music from pc to mac and calibrating it to work just the way i want it... but when i tried to repair permissions and booted using my friend's panther's OS X cd... it hanged, we both thought there was something wrong with the cd drive when i got back home, decided to try it again using the cd that came along with the ibook and it works.... is my cd drive "picky" then?
brought it to LMK to have it checked once and for all after my friend tried to boot again his cd since it worked when i tried it that night.. and unfortunately had to leave it for a couple of days (using a pc right now, hahaha
) ANYWAYS... they found nothing wrong with the software nor hardware of the ibook but the cd drive itself... now thing is they tried booting their own cds to brand new ibooks and same results
now we've been hearing stories from other members having problems with their macs not working when it comes to hardware... does this mean apple is not doing very well on the hardware department thats why these problems occur? or are we just the lucky ones who gets lemons?
as of now my friend is taking care of it and contacting apple to ask them if their aware of this flaw that they have in their portables.
so why don't you guys check your ibooks or pbooks if their also "picky" you may have a problem there

I heard from one of my co-worker before (a couple of years back) that namimili ng CDs.. Dunno it was true until I tried to burn some stuff on a CD-RW and it didn't work, worked with other CD-RWs.. Haven't had the chance to have it checked since when I reinstalled OS X (with the CDs included w/ the iBook) there were no problems.

but thats just like saying your mac only likes the cds that came along with it.... it really shouldn't be that way when you think about it, it should boot or accept any kind of cd that you insert in the cd drive... weird...

Well, in longbeard's case, it seems to have been a software problem since it was solved when he reinstalled Mac OS X. I think his case is different from yours, unless he can't boot from other CDs either.

i just had my almost new (2 months) dvd-rom replaced by a reseller. i suggest you bring it to a different service center for 2nd opinion. the 1st service center i brought it to didn't find anything wrong with the hardware as well. there are a lot of lemons out there, trust me. i've been a victim.

The problem was not solved with that particular CD-RW.. It works fine with my Desktop PC and other PCs here in the office (was also working with my old laptop).. I'll try getting the exact brand of the CD-RW maybe anyone here have used it with there MACs.

Here is a weird one: An iBud of mine tried using a factory Panther set to upgrade, but his G3 iBook failed to recognize some of the cds. However, it recognized all cds from a “liberated”(like an Iraqi oil well) set burned on a hack friendly widows box, copied from the same factory set. We are still scratching our heads.

Has your iBud tried using the Panther CDs before? Or was it the first time he used the CDs and it didn't work?

It was the first attempt to upgrade. The factory set works on another but older G3 iBook... But only the "Liberated" copy loads on his G3 iBook. We suspect the drives in iBooks vary greatly in their ability to read differing qualities of disks. A slight blemish on the factory set may then be the cause of the non-recognition... maybe?
