osx for ibook 300?
I'm considering upgrading my os9 to osx in my ibook 300, is this wise or is this machine too slow to handle later operating system versions of apple?
Currently i have 256 + 32mb ram and 30gb hd.
peace! ~_^

Same here. I helped a friend upgrade her iMac bondi 233 and it's running on panther. 288MB of RAM as well and a 40GB HD.

Here are my specs:
Tangerine iBook 300, 256MB + 32MB RAM, 20GB, Panther OSX 10.3.6.
It's running perfectly fine. It's actually amazing. It's more a desktop now though, since the battery is dead and I don't care to spend P8k for a new one.
You'll be fine, but make sure your firmware is updated before upgrading to OS X. You'll need to be running OS9.1 to perform the update though.

correct me if i'm wrong but you need to be running OS 9.2.2 before you can upgrade to OS X (panther)? i remember when i was upgrading my Pismo, i sought help from this forum and Gonz walked me through the right steps in the upgrade process. he guided me in updating the OS 9 to the latest one (9.2.2) before i installed panther.
and i confirmed that from this site which says:
"Before installing Mac OS X, it is recommended that you update Mac OS 9 to the latest version (9.2.2). You can update your software by choosing Control Panels from the Apple menu, and then choosing Software Update from the submenu that appears. In the Software Update window, click the Update Now button to search for any available updates."

That is absolutely right, Jim.
Let me clarify my last post with this quote:
The iBook Firmware Update 4.1.7 will only run on iBook computers running Mac OS 9.1 from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local
Mac OS 9.1 writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk) prior to following the update instructions. Firmware Update 4.1.7 includes improvements to Firewire target disk mode, network booting, gigabit networking (on systems with gigabit hardware), and system stability. This update also adds support for additional security options which allow the Open Firmware to be password protected. This update also contains changes from earlier Firmware Updates. This update adds support for 256 megabyte (MB) memory modules and improved support for using a USB storage device, such as an external hard drive, as a startup disk.
OS 9.1 is a minimum when performing the firmware update.
If you are upgrading from OS 9 to OS X, then you should have OS 9.2.2 as a minimum, This is what I did when I first upgraded the iBook to OS 10.1
However, when I installed Panther, I booted from the Panther install CD and selected a clean install (which wipes out everything in the HD), In this case, it doesn't matter what version of OS 9 is installed.
In any case, it doesn't hurt to have the latest version of OS 9 prior to going OS X.
