Is it okay to carry around your iBook while its in sleep mode?
Or could it suddenly wake up (even while the lid is closed), power up and spin your hard disc, then you hit a bump, causing your hard disc to crash.
Could this happen?
Is it safe to carry around your iBook/PBook/AlBook while in sleep mode?
Thanks.

do you have a carrying case for your mac? cuz that helps by preventing you from accidentally touching the latch for the mac to open up and wake up from sleep... besides us mac users are known for not putting out lappies to sleep and just start em and go when we need to get a job done and just close and off you go when we're through using it
i say no need to worry too much

Of course it's ok. Your worry seems to border on paranoia, Cricket.
There is a remote chance this could happen, but the probability of that is on the order of winning the lotto.
Carry away. Millions do. Just don't drop it onto the floor while it's asleep (which is something you shouldn't do in any case).
And if the unthinkable does happen, then call it Fate. Destiny. Kismet. Because if it does happen to you, it was going to whether or not you did anything about it. Think of it as an excellent excuse to upgrade.

yes yes yes yes yes! can we close this thread now? ((just kidding.) been doing this for years with all kind of powerbooks and ibooks, going to london, italy, south africa, germany, etc!
if your laptop is ever jolted awake (and it can happen), your machine, at worst, will expend all power and shut down. it could feel hot to the touch, but it will be okay. in that case, plug it into the wall socket, wait about 20-30 minutes (it won't fire up instantly, don't panic!) then turn it on.

Clamshell iBooks seems to be more prone to waking when carried by the built-in handle. All it takes is a momentary opening of the lid/screen side. So always carry in a bag/backpack.
Clamshells also have a rare mechanical "bug" wherein it gets confused and mixes up the perceived state of the lid/screen. It thinks the lid is open when it's closed and vice-versa. Onced carried around this ol' Graphite with it awake inside a bag. Nothing happened with the hard disk, though. The battery just got drained.

sleep problems often have to do with what technicians call the "sleep actuator"--that part of the mechanism, i think, that engages the latch and tells the machine to sleep. dunno how to fix it, just fyi.
