Default Maxtor One Touch II external hard drive

I need to know if I can use this as a regular external drive a la La Cie or is it limited to making back-ups?

    Thanks.

as far as i know, it's a regular external drive with software for one-touch backup and its Mac compatible. i asked around for the prices, about 15k+ for the 250Gig and 18k for the 300Gig.
Most stores nga lang are out of stock. I remember seeing one with a free bag for carrying the drive around. I was thinking about this one or the La Cie D2 drives but in the end settled muna for DIY external storage.

I'm using the 250 GB as a backup drive (one partition) and the other as my scratch disk for video editing.

    No problem so far.

Wingmac, did you specify the 'Mac-formatted' model? Maxtor website seems to mention a specific Mac and Wintel model. Do you have to install their software to use the drive? How do you archieve your videos?

Hypersomniac, I would've started saving for a base X-Raid until I noticed it uses a fiber channel interface... Then it was a Wiebetech portable Raid-5 enclosure but that was too pricey... Then it was a Intel/AMD based PC running Linux with Raid-5 controllers but I can't do Linux...

And to think this started because my La Cie is almost full, in less than a year.

    Say... what a about a Power Mac G5 with Wiebetech's mod that'll cram 10 3.5" drives inside...?

it really feels liberating when you know you have plenty of storage.
Now i can start ripping CDs again. I have a 200 Gig and 160 gig external drive.
i would like to have sana a single 300 Gig instead. So either ill get the One Touch or a La Cie.

HooHaw, why not another La Cie big disk ?

I'm thinking diversity in brand will keep trouble at bay...

And it didn't cross my mind to get another LaCie 8-). it does pay to advertise. I just e-mailed them for about their dealer here.

I have a Maxtor 250 gig which I use as scratch disk for my Final Cut files. No problems with it, it's been rock solid so far...although my favourite portable drive is still my iPod. :P

what's the appropriate partition for an external hd?

just got myself a 250g maxtor one touch II. i'm about to initialize the drive now but i know nothing about partitions and i heard it is very important and its crucial that i set the right partitions from the start.

i want to set a partition for backing up files, another for making it a bootable drive and another partition for storing my video files/ as a scratch disk for fcp.

do i have to seperate the partition of my scratch disk and the backup files?

can you guys recommend the appropriate size for each partition: the partition to make the drive bootable, scratch disk for video editing and partition for the backup files. one more thing, is it still really necessary to create partitions in the first place? i've been getting different contradicting suggestions from other people and im getting confused.

    would appreciate any advice.
