Default LF advice re iBooks: 12\" screen vs 14\" screen

In the seven weeks I've spent here in Spain, I've convinced two friends to buy a Mac instead of a Windows laptop.

One of them is on the verge of buying an iBook (he'll buy one next week). I receommended the new 12" iBook with an additional 256MB of RAM, and he's convinced. BUT he talked to another guy (a common friend, a Windows guy with an open mind) who recommends the 14" model because of the bigger screen.

The buyer welcomes the idea of working with a larger screen, but since the resolution is the same, is there really a difference between using a 12" screen and a 14" screen? I know this is mostly a subjective judgement, but I welcome any comments that can help him make the right decision.

PS The buyer is fairly young (early 30s), uses eyeglasses (but mababa ang grado so no real problems with eyesight).

Off the bat, you might sacrifice a little portability with the 14". However, IIRC, the 14" comes with a faster CPU and more memory and storage out of the box. I think the superdrive option is available for the 14" only as well.

i personally use the 14" iBook. and i am very happy with it. but when i comes to mobility, the 12" wins. i was hoping that i would change mine into a 12" since i ride a scoot. but when i am doing my graphic layouts, i came to realize, the bigger the screen the better..

Even if the resolution is the same? I was thinking that the images and fonts will just look "tighter" but there wouldn't be much of a difference, really.

I know it probably will be different from person to person, but in your case, does it really feel that much better?

    yes it does.

you were thinking that the images and fonts will just look "tighter".. well it came from you.. tighter on a smaller screen? right?

so watching television on a 29" screen is the same with watching on a 17" or whatever size and it won't be much of a difference, really? well, i'm sorry if your answer is yes, i don't know what your case is...

I would get the 14" especially if your friend had eye problems. Yes the resolution is the same, but the bigger workspace on the 14" would be more helpful. My :2cents:

Thanks for the advice, guys. In the end he decided to give more priority to weight and portablity rather than the larger screen, FYI.

    Thanks again.
