Default considering an upgrade - advice please

    Hi,

I'm considering upgrading from my G3 500Mhz ibook to either a faster ibook or powerbook. My main worry, apart from the cost , is the cracking case/cover for both the ibook and powerbook.

I never had this problem w/ my ibook but my friend bought an ibook about 5 months ago and the case is warping and has hairline cracks. I've been surfing the net on this and found other, similar complaints about the powerbook (including cracking LCDs!) . I'm wondering if this is a common problem w/ the new 'books as I certainly don't want to spend all that money only to have the case warp/crack on me after a few months.

Would appreciate opinions etc. on this. Thanks

How the hell does your friend use his portables? hehehehe.

Ibooks I can imagine the hairline cracks since I believe they use acryllic - so it isn't that unbelievable (but I don't own one, so don't quote me on that).

Powerbooks are aluminum so unless you really punish it on purpose with intent to break it, it probably wont crack easily. The only parts that can "easily" be worn sa mga albooks now are the plastic guards along the "edges," but then again, that's their purpose (parang fenders)

Downside though is powerbooks are prone to scratches from metal to metal contact (and those are almost impossible to clean) so just make sure you never move it around knowing you have metal stuff it can hit (or cover it up whenever you transport it).

Warping naman - I guess it is possible for BOTH lines since that's usually a result of temperature and humidity. But i'm still curious as to what environment those books exhibiting the problem are exposed too. The phils is a fairly hot country, but the only case I can consider something as sturdy as laptops warping is leaving it in a car exposed to the blazing sun or something.

Sa LCD naman, I think minalas lang friend mo, or baka pangit yung batch na pinagkuhanan from the production line.

I think basta maalaga ka, there's nothing to worry about.

So far, neither I nor any of my friends/family have had any problems of warping/cracking cases or LCDs with their iBooks or PowerBooks (3 iBook G3s, 3 iBook G4s, 2 12" PowerBooks).

I own both PowerBook and iBook, I've never had any problems with warping or cracking LCD.

I wonder were does your friend keep his iBook.

If budget permiting get the PowerBook. :2cents:

i've heard of three cases of iBooks with hairline scratches (all middle of this year) but mine never had one.

i think those were lemon units that were replaced.

i have an iBook and i'm craving for a powerbook... next year perhaps.

Cracked lid near the hinges was common with the Titanium Powerbooks. I know since mine and 2 of my friends TBooks had them.
As for the Albooks... check this post again next year so I can update you if mine develops cracks.:lol::lol:
