Haven't tried it personally, but according to some forumers over @ pinoymac, the only way to achieve resolutions greater than 1024 x 768 on an external display is to apply the iBook spanning hack. Otherwise, you're limited to 1024 x 768 in mirroring mode.

One annoying thing with the ibook is that it's stuck in mirroring mode.

if you're using a VGA adaptor, dapat automatic na yun detected. if not go to preferences> display> detect display> then do the necessary adjustment. (uncheck the mirroring options if you want to use the external monitor as extension).

Does anyone know if it's possible to use an external monitor while your notebook's screen is closed down? I've often thought about getting a 20" monitor to connect to my 15" Albook.

Yup Chut, that's possible. Your powerbook needs to be plugged in to your power adaptor then the display. just close the lid and use as normally as you would. A word of caution though, some people have experienced their albook heating up so much that it might cause damage to the LCD. if i were you just keep the lid open and use dual display mode. Another option would be to close the lid, wait till it goes to external display mode and then pop the lid open again. The LCD will remain turned off and you'll get ventilation for your powerbook.

I tried this using my ibook.. I attached the power adaptor then I attached the display using the VGA display adapter then I closed the lid then it went to sleep. Or does this solution work with powerbook only?

Check out http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html. It's also been discussed in several places around the board.
