    Default Care for your portables

    Hi everyone!

I am not sure if this were posted in the old forum, but I do hope we can start one here. Can the ibook/powerbook users post on their "How to care for your mac" tips (physically) or maybe we can aslo add "How to keep your mac running smoothly" tips, but I guess this should be for every mac user ibook/powerbook and powermac/imacs alike.

Got our new iBook 12" (yup, on the day the new ones were announced ).

    Salamat

I use a RoadTools CoolPad, clean the wrist area with an eraser, brush off the eraser residue with a Clinique portable retractable blush brush, wipe it off with a damp-ish diaper at times, wash the iSkin when dirty, and spot clean with Gatsby Oil Sheets once in a while.

    That's about it for me.

Default It\'s literally like a baby!

Since our first baby was born last month, i just realised how much parallelism taking care of a baby and owning a powerbook have... in short, having a powerbook or ibook is really like having a real baby. (although some of us would literally consider it as such)

Just like a real baby, a powerbook or ibook needs to be:

    carried
    wiped
    put to sleep
    "blanketed"while sleeping
    caressed
    touched many times
    protected with all our energy
protected from people who are poking the screen
    and Kissed.

and just like a real baby, we panic when:

it does not want to sleep
    it get's wet and dirty
    it gets a kernel panic
it becomes sick (we run to doctors at philmug)

and just like a real baby... it can be really costly!

But the good thing about a real baby...there is none like it!

one of my best laptop accessories is a wide flat brush with plastic bristles, which you can find in the art supplies section of any national bookstore for the princely sum of about P20. beats everything else in picking up all that lint, potato chip bits, and lord knows what else lies beneath your keyboard.

i second the motion!!! found your tip really useful, sir butch! being an FA student, i soon found an old flat bristle brush lying around, and i haven't left it home since! great for brushing off residue after cleaning the wrist area with a white/clear eraser, and the 3M cloth works wonders on the screen...two other tips i got here at PhilMUG.

i think i already got all the cleaning tips i needed even before i got my iBook!

I use a really old towel that I keep damp to clean my powerbook. I tried cleaning under my keys with a swab one time and got really OC about it that I accidentally took off a few keys. OOPS. Good thing I was able to put them back! After that incident, I never used a swab under my keys again... good tip about the brushes, I'm gonna try that once I'm done posting here!

an old diaper / old towel and soapy water (konti lang ang soap! tsaka really mild) for the outside casings. 3m cloth for the screen.
Here's a tip! Wash your hands before working! that usaully keeps oil and grease away from the keyboard.
And a sheet of bond paper between the screen and keyboard when the pbook is closed.

    Thanks for the tips.

I do actually use a brush for cleaning the keyboards of my desktops. I guess I better get one for the ibook too (the one I used for the desktops is greyed with grime already--talked about pollution).

I find the this new iBook demands a little more sensitivity. Compared to the Clamshell it replaced, it feels more fragile. My three-year old baby sat on the graphite iBook more than once, and I am not too keen to let her try again this time around.

With Dingkydoo's reference to it being a baby, that is precisely how i feel about it (fragile and all), I just hope it grows to become more like a toddler (better strength and stamina, short of being tossed around) without the 'terrible' part attached to it.

Thanks again, keep the tips coming.

I use Klearscreen on my Powerbook's screen, wrist rests, and outer shell once every two weeks. Works wonders!

I also use trackpad film, which is in dire need of a replacement. it's been 5 months and I haven't replaced it yet!

Klearscreen. I usually do a general wipe down once every 2 weeks. I begin with the screen and then proceed to the externals.

For everyday cleaning, I just use a radtech sleevz.

I try avoiding placing my 'book directly on any surface. I always use a cool pad or just work on top of my zeroshock.
