Airport extreme card not recognized in Powerbook 15" Aluminum

Just got an Airport Extreme card and excitedly installed it into my 1ghz Aluminum Powerbook. When I booted OSX Panther up, it is not recognized by the machine. Tried to reinstall it over and over, but no success.
Thinking that the card might be broken, I installed it in an iBook G4 - no problem, immediately detected, works like a charm.
Anyone who can give a tip on how to get this working, besides bringing it to Apple repair center?
