870 MB / 99 min. CD-R not recognized by iBook?
Hi, all.
Just a quick question: Today a bought a couple of CD-Rs with an advertised capacity of 870MB / 99 minutes, expecting them to be big enough to contain certain large (700+ MB) files (DivX movies ;-).
When I popped one into the iBook's combo drive, Finder recognized it as a blank CD-R but wouldn't allow me to drag the 700+ MB file onto it claiming it was too large. Finder recognized the blank disk as only having ~670MB (700MB minus overhead, I guess) space!
Is this:
a) a limitation of the drive, and/or
b) a limitation of Finder, whereby using more full-featured burning software (e.g., Roxio Toast) can help?
Thanks!

Both. Your drive needs to have overburning capability, and you need to use FireStarter FX. :-)

How does one find out if one's drive has overburning capability?
Hey Al. I got the discs from this small shop in Park Square 1 that sells blank CDs and PS/2 & Gameboy games - it's near the framing shop, towards the exit near Mercury Drug. Though I'm willing to bet CDR King would have them, too.
Thanks, all who replied. Meanwhile, lemme check out Firestarter FX.

Is this the end of this "old thread"? Has anyone posted real information on how to successfully burn an 870MB CD on an iBook, iMac, or...?
I've got a 735MB QuickTime Movie I want to get OUT of my Mac.
How???
Please help!

Re: 870 MB / 99 min. CD-R not recognized by iBook?
As mentioned earlier, it depends on the specific OEM drive on your Powerbook. Some drives support greater than 700MB disks, some don't. It's not tied to the particular model, since some models have different OEMs, or different drives (ie. CD-R, Combo, SuperDrive, etc). The best way to find out is to search the Net for your particular OEM model (which you can find using apple system profiler).

What I do with my 700+MB files is to compile them into several files on a single layer DVD-R. I think its way cheaper to it this way. Also puts less strain on your drives. Overburning is kinda like oveclocking your CPU. Imho
