iBook G4 + 80GB hard drive = perfectly a-ok. :-)
There's no reason why putting an 80GB drive in an iBook G4 will cause the system to crash. Kinda weird for a technician to claim otherwise.
Even the Apple Store offers an 80GB drive as an option for the iBook G4s. Check out the attached image below. ;-)
hey, MAC convert. Congratulations with your new iBook. I hope your not mad at me for recommending the supplier. anyways, this is my answer. All harddisks for ibooks/powerbooks or even for pcs are sized 2.5", hence they can be installed to any portable. Apple is currently selling their portables with either 20, 30, 40, 60, or 80G harddisks. hence no problem installing an 80G with your ibook. Another thing, apple does not manufacture their own harddisks. They usually get third-party manufacturers like Toshiba, Hitachi, or Dell for their laptops. I really don't know why the supplier refused to install the 80G hdd. Did you get the 80G from them? What was the original capacity of the hdd you got?

Actually, Dell doesn't manufacture hard drives. Like Apple, it relies on manufacturers like Toshiba, Hitachi, Fujitsu, Seagate, etc. for its laptop hard drives. :-)
Apart from size (2.5" for laptops, 3.5" for desktops), another important consideration when shopping for a replacement laptop hard drive is the thickness of the drive. Some older laptop drives are 12mm thick and won't fit inside most current Apple portables. The good news is that current laptop hard drives are mostly 9.5mm thick so no problems installing them inside an iBook or a TiBook/AlBook.
