Play AVI, MKV and other formats on your iPad
Have you guys heard that Apple allowed this media player for the iPad/iPhone that allows you to play AVI, MKV, WMV and other formats, doing away with the need for that pesky MP4? It even recognizes SRT subtitle files, integrates into your Mail app and plays video attachments, does Airplay (for iPad 2), has DTS/AC3 5.1 audio support, does iTunes file sharing, has a passcode lock, downloads videos and a lot more. I just found it myself and am trying it now.
It came out last month, and it's called Azul Media Player. I think it's only on the US iTunes store, although I could be wrong; I haven't tried it on other stores. It's on sale for the holidays, only $1.99. Great investment if you ask me.
You can get it here.
If the world had no fences or walls, we wouldn't need Gates or Windows.

There are plenty more apps there. I even have (still) the original VLC before it was pulled

Re: Play AVI, MKV and other formats on your iPad
I've been using AVPlayer HD and it can play almost any file I throw at it. Yes even MKVs. Based on my experience with it, it does almost everything Azul says it does as well.
What's really REALLY nice with AVPlayer HD is that you can make customer GESTURES. Do a two finger swipe to fast forward/rewind slightly, three fingers for a bigger jump, four fingers for a huge jump... you get the idea.
Having said that, Azul looks like it's currently on sale...

I also use media connect together with my mybook live to stream movies from my NAS. Media connect also enables your ipad to become a media server so that you can stream movies from your ipad to a media device like your ps3.

I generally don't keep videos on my iPad. I stream from my home server using Air Video.

Thanks for the thread Adel. If it were not for you, I wouldn't have known about these players. I've been out of touch with apps. My iPod Touch is now just a phone.
