2012 is shaping up like one of those early-1980s seasons where a number of drivers could win it every weekend and at season's end.

Deep down, the difference is that the drivers don't seem to be enjoying driving, save for Grosjean. It all looks artificially tight, this year's contest. As Webber says, succinctly, "You push, you pit."

Look at Jean Eric Vergne's rear tire, it's on the harder compound (silver) while the front one is on softs (yellow). WTF?!?

I don't think it's a silver-painted tire. I know Vergne came into contact with another car at the start, and so it this is simply the effect of tire rubbing.
