    Default recital piece

    Hi. My son will be having a drum recital soon. I would like to ask for suggestions on what piece to play. No matter what genre. I would love to hear from you. And also, if you are the judge, what factor/s are you gonna be looking for. Thanks in advance.

    will your son be allowed to have an accompaniment, or just a drum solo recital?

    how old is your son and who will be the audience?

    He's 11 years old. The audience will be teachers from the music school and parents of other competitors. He is allowed to have an accompaniment. He placed naman last year but now he's into winning it so we're kinda brainstorming for his piece. Thanks Lot rbenson.

    i have never had a recital, unless declamation contests count.

    but if i were to judge, i would look for:
    1) skill - rudiments, technique, range of musical styles;
    2) feel - dynamics, nuances, soul, groove;
    3) musicality - creativity, style, context, flow;
    4) showmanship - personality and sense of fun and enjoyment;

    if your son can read drum notation, there are solo pieces that can be purchased (online for widest selection). but much depends on available time till d-day.

    if your son is patient and persistent, or simply prolific, he may want to try something musically relevant for his age, yet technically impressive: this or this. at the very least, i hope it inspires him.

    good luck to your son! and thanks for supporting him! the world is much better because of music.

    Here's a blast from the past. Emerson,Lake and Palmers Karn Evil 9 1st Impression Part 2. Classic ProgRock.

    Lively and uptempo - check. Rudiments - check. Interesting thematic development - check. Maraming bagsakan - check. Elastic tempos - check. Big rock ending - check.

    This is a favorite of marching bands, drum corps, and percussion ensembles in the USA. Check it out on youtube. Its challenging, but not impossible.

    @riverphoenix:Just to give you a background, Personally , I LOVE music. His dad used to have a band when I was carrying him in my tummy. When he was about 2 mos old, he was lulled by classic rock music when the band was having rehearsals.... he will just sleep soundly, unlike other babies I know, this is unusual. He's about 4 years old when he told us he wanted to play the drums. I brought him to Rj, Yamaha, and they didn't accept him because he's too young. when he was 7 we tried again, still not coz he's still short. he wont be able to reach the cymbals. then we gave it a try when he was 9 1/2yo, he was accepted, in within 8 mos. he placed in a competition/recital(not the 1st but for a span of time he studied drums he's way too fast.). at 10 he performed with a band in various kiddy gigs, sponsored by certain music school.
    In every step and underneath, we are always there for him. Music is a good vice for a young person, so we encouraged him. I hope more parents can do that too. I think kanya kanyang hilig lang talaga..

    So where is he studying now? Do his lessons include the 26/40 essential rudiments?

    there are tons of video in youtube featuring solos, exercise drills or track breakdowns by Gadd, Weckl, Lars Ulrich etc. that you can choose from. I suggest you ask your kid under what genre he'd like to perform & choose the artist from there.

    good luck!
