Just a roll call if there are any muggers that use the OFFLINE / ONLINE workflows either in a corporate, event, or industrial setting.

    Thanks

OFFline/ONline editng workflows are applicable in any post-prod, may it be for corporate events, weddings and advertising. as long as the clips (mini-dv or P2 cards) are properly labeled with final scripts with clear concept.

Stupid question: but what exactly is an offline and online workflow?

Before we use fcp for offline and online editing. During online, almost all compositing, vfx and motiongfx is done in AE and then sent back to FCP for integration and playback.

Now, we're still using fcp for offline but for online, we now use autodesk smoke.

these are in place due to economic reasons. Previously, high end editorial work (eg uncompressed), effects are done with special computers which cost more than 1M USD and charge thousands per hour rate plus operator. offline work enables the producers to edit on lower cost machines which costs less. Since most of the editorial work is done in offline, editorial changes can be done economically.

Today, offline machines are still less capable in features and speed compared to online but the difference is mainly in software. think of fcp, avid, after effects in one application (eg Autodesk smoke, flame, avid DS). if you want to extract every bit of quality in your camera provided you use a high end one, the online path is desirable.
