Default which lens is better Canon EF 28-135 or 24-105?

    Help please

I want to buy a lens as a birthday gift for someone. He used to have the Canon EF 28-135, but it was stolen. I was thinking of giving that but based on what i've read so far, the EF 24-105 is better. but really, my knowledge extends to a quick search on google, thats it.

the 28-135 is half the price, but the 24-105 gets better reviews.. are they really different? what is better? do they serve the same purpose? also, where is a good place to buy? i noticed the sellers online (on multiply) sell the lenses significantly cheaper than those in hidalgo, is there a reason for this? is it better in hidalgo?

    thank you!

The 24-105 lens bears Canon's red "L" mark. Simply put, "L"-lenses are Canon's premium lenses. Hence, it is more expensive.

More details about them here: Canon L lens - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And specifically for the 24-105: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EF_24-105mm_lens

+1 - "L" lenses have a superior Image Quality over regular Canon lenses. However, the price of "L" lenses are also significantly higher (as you mentioned it's double the price). You can check 3rd party lenses (Sigma and Tamron) as another option. Read a lot of reviews on these lenses. I know you won't be the one using it but understanding and researching about it before buying will be worth it before giving that gift.

That's one very lucky birthday boy!!!

The 24-105 is best if used on a full-frame body (5D series, 1DS series, and the new 1DX). If his cam ain't any of these, the 24mm ain't too wide.

If budget is not an issue, then the 24-105 is a no brainer, I would shy away from the 28-135 series. I've owned this lens and the picture quality is even worst than the kit lens, a better alternative is Canon 15-85mm, from the what ive been hearing, the IQ of this lens is at par with one of Canons best selling lens, the 17-55.

Are you saying that if his cam isnt full frame, the 28-105 is wider than the 24-105?

He meant to say that both the 28-105 or 24-105 is meant for full frame bodies. If your friend's camera is not a full-frame camera, 24 or 28 will be too tight.

Even if it is not a full frame camera this is still an awesome lense to own. I'd take it any day if it is given as a gift and put it on mu 450D.

Even if the camera of TS's friend is not a full frame camera, I'd recommend the EF 24-105L. Its widest aperture opening (f/4) is constant throughout the zoom range and it has image stabilization. And because it is an L lens, it will make a great gift to a Canon DSLR user.

His former camera was a 20D and it's now a 5D Mark II, which is actually why i was also leaning towards the L lens. I also considered Sigma and Tamron, though I'm not sure what the appropriate counterpart is. But thanks!
