good speakers
hey guys! im updating my room audio, and i was thinking that rather than buying those expensive mini-components, id just use my sister's old discman/mp3 player, and just hook it up with computer speakers. i tried checking an altec lansing which sounded really good...would you guys recommend any good speakers? thanks guys

You may also want to demo a pair of Klipsch ProMedia speakers. They are available at Sony Avid stores.

Check out the Creative speakers, Martin. They're cheaper and sounds as great as Altec Lansings.

Another vote for Klipsch ProMedia speakers. I'm gonna buy me a set of Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 soon (replacement for my aging Altec Lansing ACS 45.1 set). :-)

Actually, Edwin - they don't. I don't mean to be a contrarian, but they traditionally have muddy bass, and the high end tends to be shrill and on the sharp end. Decades in radio have trained my ears pretty well to detect good speakers. Creatives are on the low end of the spectrum. Further, the diaphragm mountings seem to be poorly made; they eventually jar themselves loose and start to hum or buzz with moderate to high volumes. I've heard many of them go belly-up in under six months, specially those who tend to listen to loud music or thumpy games often. Creative's speakers are just a few steps up from the generic, included-in-the-box-with-the-computer speakers, and they sound like it.
They're ok for casual or short-term use, and with care should last a while. Should be fine if you don't have discerning ears. But IMHO any money spent for Creative speakers would be better used towards the purchase of something better, and in the end would be more value for your money.
Better bets would certainly be the Klipschs, HKs or ALs. And the prices aren't all that far from the Creative line. Save your money, Martin, and wait til you have enough for a better quality set. (BTW, the JBL Creature IIs don't impress me much, but they sure look cool. Henj, the ProMedia 2.1s are a good choice - and would be great for your Metallica stuff).
It's always good to find more inexpensive alternatives, but that isn't the case with everything. With speakers, you usually get what you pay for.

I'm putting in a good word for the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 as well! :-)
I've been using these since i got my first Mac a few years ago, and until today they are still kickin' hard! I read so many good reviews--i just had to get them. At that time, they were the only THX certified computer speakers on the market (not that i really knew what that meant.:-) ).
They cost me around 9-10K back then. I'm not quite sure how much they are today. But they are worth it!
