Globe WiMAX
Globe just launched their WiMax services that offer 512kbps fixed wireless broadband for 795 a month!
Full article here: http://jepoy.bengero.com/2009/03/glo...-wimax-in.html
I think that this has a lot of potential, first its cheaper and faster than SmartBro and you can install it indoors. and up to 72mbps speed, this will be a winner. I hope this would develop

I think not yet. WIFI would still be used on end devices. This would just serve as a replacement for DSL or cable on areas where the wired infrastructure is not freasible. Besides, their max speed is only 512kbps! I wonder when they can max out the 72mbps?

I think it is because their total bandwidth will be killed, imagine they have 50GB fiber optic undersea tunnel insted of 1 million subscribers that enjoy full 512kbps, they could only have 70,000 subscribers of 72mbps and they should increase the price too!

Re: Globe WiMax Launched!
wifi will not die. smartbro (motorola canopy) is still the way to go for fixed wireless.
but wimax is a welcome addition for internet on the go. 3G, HSDPA, and HSPA would be wimax's direct competition.
wimax devices is still far in the horizon here in the Philippines, and i don't think apple will be having this technology built-in to the macs in the next 7 years or more, or maybe even never. but if you are adventurous enough, we could replace the wifi module in our macbooks with this one;

but we are not sure if the signal will be good at all with globe. wimax on the iphone? i don't think so.
these new tech are always a welcome because i love new technology.
i attended a seminar in singapore 4 years ago about wimax, and it wasn't only recently has it been fully deployed there. deploying wimax infrastructure is really expensive, i don't know how globe telecom would be able to get their ROI. di pa nga yata nila nababawi ang 3G infrastructure nila.

Re: Globe WiMax Launched!
Wow, not long ago did I just read about WiMax being the next big thing. This particular broadband at home service probably won't be much of a big deal to most of us in the metro for now, this is probably Globe trying to bring the internet to the rest of the unwired islands. Although the article says Globe actually implemented mobile WiMax, so that part will be much more exciting. I hope the next generation iPhones/Macs will support WiMax. Its a good thing Globe and Apple are partners.
Still, local broadband offerings are so far from Japan's $60 160Mbps service. We pay that much and get less than a quarter of a percent of what they get.

Isn't it suspiciously timely that Globe announces WiMax a few months before June when the new iPhone with WiMax support is rumored to come out?
