Hot Macbook

My MB is about a month old now, and have since spent several hours tinkering and working with it.

I've also been slowly migrating my work stuff from Entourage/Outlook to my Mac units from my IBMs and last night, this included importing all my mail files (about 3000) into Mail. The a/c was on, my MB was perched on a Coolpad, on my lap, and with me on the bed (favorite workplace )

Only Skype, Mail, Entourage, Dashboard, Finder, Airport and Bluetooth were running as far as I could tell, and about 5-10 mins into the importing process, the MB's fan began spinning like crazy. I opened my IStat Pro Widget and this is what I saw:




CPU temp almost at 90 deg C?! Exhaust spinning at over 6 thousand rpm?! Man, is this normal? And the noise of the fan is pretty unnerving as I've never had heat issues like this in the Thinkpads I've used before :slanted:

I removed the MB's UNIEA cover, and place the unit on a chair directly in A/C's wind path, but the temp only went down by 2 degrees. But I let the import process finish, and just let the MB take the heat. After that task was done (about 30 mins), the MB cooled down to normal and worked ok naman.

Fyi, I have a MB 2.16 Intel core duo, w/ 2G of RAM, and a 120G HD

Any insight into this would be appreciated, including any thoughts on the data showing on IStat Pro... thanks!

i think its okay.. i experience temperature rising from my macbook too .. the fan roars, but its still okay. i really dont use the software to measure the heat.. i'll just wait till it burn, or something pops. i'm not an expert for the mac hardware, neither did i build it hehehe.. if you are unsure, you better call apple right away, the experts will tell you so.

The temp doesn't look normal to me.. normal range for my macbook is around 50-55 degrees. During intensive use, like when I transcode movie files through VisualHub, temp rises to the range of 65 to 70. Is it the same when the charger is not plugged (just using the batt alone)?

i suggest when that happens again, try to smell the mac, if its still the box smel, it should be good. if a burning or unusual smell.. try to shut it down.

imo, coolpad and speedballs are only effective on notebooks that have air verts at the bottom... the added clearance improves airflow underneath the laptop where the fans usually take in air.

This is not the first time it's happened but I didn't have the software to measure the temp then. When this specific incident occurred, the unit was on AC.

I do recall the sound of Skype registering a contact coming online being distorted, you know, like a crackling sound of the notification instead of the "water-drop-like" sound Skype usually makes...yeah, I think it was pretty hot for that to happen.

Well, I couldn't detect any burning smell, just hot air coming out of the vents at the back.

That's reassuring, thanks! And since the MB is working fine still, this heat "issue" is probably not as bad as I thought it was. Keeping my fingers crossed and will observe further. But it sure was hot. Blame it on the fast chip
