@trigo,
Follow these steps:
- Attach/Connect your external monitor to your MB.
- Go to Systems Preferences > Display. There will be a Display Preferences window on each monitor.
- Select desired Resolution on your external monitor. You MB should be able to to use 1680 x 1050 on the external display.
- Click on Arrangement button on the Display Preferences window on your MB LCD.
- Make sure that you don't select "Mirror Displays"
- There is an instruction to relocate the menu bar to a different display. Relocating the menu bar will also relocate the dock.

On an external monitor it can. Max resolution that the unibody Macbook can handle is 2560 by 1600, which is better than full HD (i.e., 1080p, or 1920 x 1080). Details at http://www.apple.com/macbook/specs.html

Try using DVI to connect to your LCD. I've had friends having problems with higher resolutions (either resolution won't show up or flickering display) using VGA connection. But once they used DVI to connect, no more problems.

That makes sense. VGA is an analog connection - you will get much better results using a purely digital connection to the monitor - DVI

Yes, but you won't get the best resolution. You're sure that your monitor doesn't have DVI-in?
