external dvd burner for mbpro 3rd party

i hope someone could help me here, im kinda worried i might soon "burn out" the dvd burner on my mbpro and since its built in, repairs may be hard to come by. Im thinking maybe i should just use an external dvd drive/burner for all my save to burn files on dvd. i learned that with the normal pc, although not mac, external dvd burner is possible no different from the external hard drives. you just buy an appropriate casing and a dvd burner like samsung, etc.

except for a sony brand that is mac compatible, none of those i asked there know if macs especially mbpro can read an external dvd burner via usb or whatever connection there is.

i was thinking of just buying a casing and a dvd burner. anyone did/do this?

will an mbpro read 3rd party dvd burners? the sony alternative is kinda expensive kasi.

Hi.

I have personally used an external case (with a Firewire 400 and USB 2 interface) and paired it up with a Pioneer, NEC and Lite-On DVD burners.

They worked with my MBP, MacBook, iBook and Mac Pro - of course this was through a course of 3 years - not all at the same time.

Most present day DVD burners are compatible with modern day Macs. For piece of mind, you might want to ask the retailer for their return policy on items that are non-compatible. But I really think you should be fine.

I just bought an LG GSA-E50L for around P5,000. It's a slim external DVD writer with Lightscribe and is powered only thru USB ports. Works perfectly on MacBooks.

I bought an LG external, the big one, which is 3K. it has one year warranty, and is factory made, not the one with the burner built-into the enclosure. it's good.

I use a toshiba dvd drive (made in the philippines at laguna!) and a generic enclosure. works well with toast, disk utility for burning. Plus and play too, auto mounts dvds.

coolness... thanks for the input guys! usually the boxes/packaging of the dvd burners indicate only that they are windows compatible so i hesitate getting one. but seems you guys are doing what was in my mind all along. with no problems.

my superdrive got busted and I am planning to get an external DVD writer. question is, can you use the external drive in using your restore discs (is the device recognized from boot-up?)
