super slow imac
i'm not sure if my mac has some kind of internal problems but it was really slow. At first i thought maybe it's just the internet connection but when i try to re-install my sims 3 it took about five hours to install the thing halfway.
I have an imac version 10.6.4 with 2.4 GHz processor
any insights?

Re: super slow imac
Try the following:
1. Restart the computer
If problem persists, proceed to no 2.
2. Check you HD and HD space. Avoid using up all disk space. Remove unnecessary files.
Run disk utility, verify and repair permissions. Then verify disk. If errors are found, boot to your Mac OS X cd and run disk repair.
If problem persists, proceed to no 3.
3. Create another user account.
See if you exprience the same problem. If yes, there's a problem with your account.
Transfer your files to your new user account.
OR
Do an archive and install.
If this were a hardware problem, verifying disk would already have told you, or you'll experience freezing often.

This could also be a sign of a failing hard disk. I suggest you back up all your stuff and run Disk Utility or Onyx to check the health of your HD.

if everything fails, reformat your hd with zero option. it will take some time but it will clean your drive and re-install applications.

In our office we had a slow iMac too. After some check ups and tests by the Mac technician, the source of the problem was the HD with a bad sector. We had the HD replaced and things were running smoothly. Though I can't generalize this would always be the case for slow computers.

Try to Repair Disk using the Disk Utility of your OS X Snow Leopard installer, also CleanMyMac to remove files that hog space & resources...

I have been experiencing this problem also with my iMac, itunes keep skipping. When i click on something it pinwheels. I checked disk util and it says S.M.A.R.T: FAILING
This was just last night.
Is replacing the hard disk included in the warranty?
I got my iMac from HongKong, and have the reciept and this was just 3 months ago. Will power mac or any authorised mac center honor my warranty?

Yes replacing the HD is part of your warranty and you may bring your iMac to any local Apple Reseller to have it diagnosed. They will ask for your machine's serial and from there they would based the warranty. Try to bring it to Digital Hub. If you can avail of AppleCare that would be better and advisable.
