iMac i3 won't respond to bootup keystrokes
So, the iMac was acting up with the spinning rainbow all the time. I used disk utility to repair the disk and it says, I can't use disk utility on the iMac, and just boot up to the install disk and use the disk utility there. So I did, and it also said that it cannot repair the disk and save all data and install the OS again. I rebooted and went into Target disk mode, plugged in a firewire and used my MBP to reformat the hard drive. I got the SL install disk and rebooted using the C key nothing happened. I used Option key this time and it showed the DVD install on startup and I clicked it. But after waiting for about 5 minutes nothing happened. Next I tried the option key on start up and that too didn't do anything. Turned off the iMac and unplugged it, waited for a minute and plugged it back and powered up using the Option key once more but again nothing happened. Reset the PRAM nothing, The SL DVD is stuck inside. Powering up the iMac and pressing the eject button didn't work. Tried everything from the start once more, and now it doesn't respond to any keyboard commands. All i'm seeing is the apple logo and nothing happens after that. Hoping that something could happen if I leave it on after an hour something might happen, but still nada. I'm about to take this to the apple service. But I wanted to know if there are anymore options that I missed. I googled for answers but, I didn't find anyone having the same problem.

Could possibly be the signs of a dying hard disk. Had a similar experience as yours - twice with our iMacs before. Is it still in warranty? Send it to an ASP so that they can fix it.

Thanks, I got it from Switch. I can't remember if I got an applecare with it but, I did find an applecare box in the drawer where I put the iMac. How do I find out if it has applecare?

Hi Juice, check your serial number here to see if your iMac is still within warranty:

Thanks Zoey, I can't find the box. I think the serial number would be there too since I can't turn on to find out the serial number of the iMac.

always try to keep the box. only dispose of it whenever youre disposing your unit already.
