i want to know from those who have used both applications which one is better overall. i've read several reviews comparing the two but i want to know what philmuggers think. is it practical to have both apps in your 'Book? if i were to choose just one which one should i retain in my 'Book? thanks in advance for your inputs.
Keynote is kewl. Offers impressive effects and it's so easy to use. So if I were to choose just one, I'd keep Keynote. Besides, there's always that save-as-powerpoint-file option for the Windows users who want a copy of your presentation. Too bad for them though, your ultra impressive keynote effects get muddled up in a strange way in the process. But I'm sure your 30GB iBook can keep both programs so why choose when you can swing?
I've just started using PowerPoint 2004. First impression: it's still not as smooth and elegant as Keynote when it comes to transitions. In essence, it behaves very PowerPoint-like. My observation is based on a Keynote project exported to PPT. So far, I don't see anything in the new version that's impressive. I'll try creating a new one, then I'll post a more detailed review.
As to your question, I'd keep both apps around. There are times you'll be needing PowerPoint, but you'll prefer using Keynote for sure.
I agree with Elbert and Iya. I prefer Keynote over PP for its elegance but I do sometimes need PP to accommodate my PC-using officemates' presentations.
I decided to do all my lectures ths semester in Keynote, and after preparing three lectures, I've decided that it's a keeper. It's simpler to use (even when I was using PowerPoint I rarely used all the whiz-bang effects that it offered), and the effects and transitions are nicer.
After the first lecture, one student approached me to say that she wasn't able to follow the lecture well because she kept waiting for the transition to the next slide (the cube transition) -- LOL. It's not exactly a good thing, but... you get the point.
I have a copy of Office vX, so I've still got PowerPoint in my laptop. I find that I need it because many people send me their PowerPoint presentations for review, and the conversion from PowerPoint to Keynote (and vice-versa) isn't so clean.
Ang daming themes! Those designs don't look like they were done in Redmond, Cupertino maybe, but not Redmond. Pretty cool. I'm now porting them all to Keynote! hahahaha.
Good feature. Helps make make otherwise boring slides more interesting. Still, PPT 2004 is nowhere near the level of Keynote.
Keynote is sleek, but I still feel that its sluggish compared to MS PowerPoint. However, neither supports embedded fonts when exchanging with the PC version of PowerPoint.
One thing to consider when using KeyNote is that, if you have to share your presentation with PC users, consider using PDF instead, as that will guarantee your layout and design is preserved. You will, however, lose audio/video, transitions, and animiation as a result. If you do export to PPT, make sure to look at it using the PC version of PowerPoint or the PowerPoint viewer. Most of the times, the problems are with font sizing and spacing.
