iTunes gift card problems

Hi everyone. Newbie here.

I managed to set up a US iTunes account by following the instructions posted here. The problem is, I keep getting an error everytime I try to redeem gift cards. I've tried a gift card that my sister in the US bought for me as well as one I bought from ebay. Both cards are US iTunes gift cards and I am confident both are genuine/valid. Unfortunately, iTunes keeps saying "the code you entered is not recognized as a valid code" everytime I try to redeem both cards.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? Any help will be appraciated.

Did you scratch off "gently" with a coin the designated area to reveal the code that you should be using?
