Default Help...Software Update and Safari quits

I'm having a problem with some apps...

Software Update: it quits after a couple of seconds...I'm trying to download the latest update but I can't do it using this app.

Safari: The same problem, it quits after a couple of seconds that I open it. Just noticed it today since I'm using Camino.

I just downloaded the latest update of Panther (10.3.4) thinking that it might be fixed after updating but the same thing happened with both apps.

    Help po please

did you fix permissions after the update?

Sounds like your permissions are pooched. First, try this: create a new Admin user and see if Software Update and Safari both still quit when logged in as that new user. If the problem persists, then you have a system-wide problem. If the problem goes away, then your problem is limited to your original user account, most likely a permissions issue.

If the latter, try repairing permissions using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility), and see if the problem is resolved.

Another thing to try if the above doesn't work: go to your Home folder's Library > Preferences, find the file named "com.apple.safari.plist" and trash it, log out, log back in, see if Safari is fixed. Do the same with the file "com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist".

    Hope this helps!

with fixing the permissions, and trashing some files from the library...the problem's still there.

    both apps still quits.

i have another account and tried to open both programs with it...same thing happened.

    maybe it's a system-wide problem

    now what should I do?

By any chance, did you recently install an HP PSC 1300, 2400, 2500, or HP Officejet 5500 printer? If so, a font was installed with the printer software that is the cause of your problem, as described in this hint from MacOSXHints:

A fix for Software Update unexpectedly quitting

I was recently upgrading a Mac from Jaguar to Panther, and in the process of using Software Update to bring it up to spec with the latest updates, I reached a point at which Software Update would "unexpectedly quit" before even beginning the download. Even some separately downloaded installers -- those that included a license agreement, I learned later -- would exhibit the same symptom, right after the administrator password was entered.

The solution is the on-line Support area on Apple's web site. It's in Article 25725, and it took me a while to find it. If, as I did, you're checking macosxhints first, hopefully this will save you some time.

[robg adds: As the article points out, the fix is to disable the "Times RO" font. Down near the bottom of the document, there's a one-liner that reads 'Some versions of stand-alone HP printer software install this font,' along with a link. The link, though, fails to load the proper page at HP. So I did a bit of digging, and found the page. It seems the font is installed by the driver software for the HP PSC 1300, 2400, 2500, and HP Officejet 5500 printers.]
    Good luck!

    my problem's still there...please help.

the problem was there even before i made the update...

Regarding the hp printer...i have installed it a month ago so i don't think that's the problem.

About fixing permissions...done it...but nothing happened

I logged another account and the same thing happened, so as what gonz have said, maybe it's a system-wide problem.

    Help po...Thanks in advance.

Hi dBAGZiq, I encountered a similar problem after updating from Jaguar to Panther. In addition to Safari and System Update; Mail and Sherlock weren't working either.

I've been delaying repairs until this morning because I thought the only solution would be a "clean install". I was able to fix the problem through another Admin account. I noticed that all the Apps mentioned above were still working on the alternate account. The 10.3.4 upgarde ran smoothly and fixed the problems of my main user account.

You might consider backing up you data and performing a clean install or using a 3rd party software.

Here are some threads that might help:
