Tips to Connect MacbookPro to Internet thru LAN
I have difficulty connecting to hotel internet using LAN cable. Sometimes I am successful, but most of the time I am not.
Any tips on how to connect to internet thru LAN?
Personally, for me this is the disadvantage of mac computers vs windows based since it is easier to connect automatically to internet regardless if its thru lan or wifi,
Pls help. I am going to india in a month and I am considering getting a netbook coz I am confident i would have easier time connecting to internet with a windows based computer.

Re: Tips to Connect MacbookPro to Internet thru LAN
hi,
the problem maybe in the network itself and not it in the mac side, meaning the network is alive but it does not have internet connection. LAN/WIFI can operate even without internet connection.
You may have been connected to a network but it doesn't have an internet connection, this is a different matter.
If you have manually configured your network settings (i.e. setup gateway, IPs), then it is better to reset the configuration to use DHCP. This means that your address will be assigned to you by the network automatically. This is the ideal setting if you connect on hotel/coffee shops/airports. if no address was assigned to you, the network is probably down.

@the_butcher, do you have your TCP/IP settings for ethernet and AirPort set as follows? "Configure IPv4: using DHCP".
Also, enter the following in your DNS field:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Those are the addresses for OpenDNS' DNS servers. I've found that they're more reliable, regardless of which ISP you're using.
These configuration items can be found is System Preferences -> Networks -> AirPort/Ethernet -> Advanced. You'll need to configure the AirPort and Ethernet interfaces separately.

Often your existing settings have a conflict with a new network. Open a new location and work with default settings. Then put the hotel required settings if any. Or bring an Airport Express and work with that.

Thanks guys. will try to do this when im in Up manila campus in a few days. I have the same problem connecting to the free wifi in the up campus. maybe because I dont know the settings? proxies? but when i asked the librarian, she says that i should/can automatically connect even without the said manual settings.
im perplexed.

That happens sometimes especially if the wireless network is using older wireless access points/routers. New Macs have the latest chipsets (Draft N), and although backwards compatible, have some issues. I've used my circa early 08 MBP in DLSU and I could not connect to the wireless network either. I get an automatic IP address, router and gateway but still cannot access the internet. It happens.
