Time Machine is the software backup system in OS X.

Time Capsule is the hardware — combination wifi router and hard drive in one housing.

Would turning off the unit prolong its lifespan? When I bought my TC I used to turn if off when I got out to work since there was no one in the house. But now that we have new housemates, I leave it turned on since it seems they're always in the house.

    Default Time Capsule Unreliable?

That would defeat the purpose of TC of always being on to backup your computer every hour

Hmm could this be an indication of a more powerful antenna?

Hopefully. Other makers (Belkin for one) are touting a 450 Mbps rating. I believe the current AEBS is still 150 Mbps.

BTW, the 450 Mbps is kinda deceptive. It's the sum of 300 Mbps on the 5 GHz band plus 150 on the 2.4 GHz. However, these makers' labels scream out the bigger number.

recently bought a 4th gen time capsule and so far, it seems to be stable. i placed it on a deepcool notebook cooler to somehow help in keeping the bottom side from getting too hot. and consequently, it seems to help reducing the heat on the top side too, since heat buildup on the bottom side is reduced.

and i have applecare on my macbook air, so that will also cover the time capsule for 3 years of warranty.

Lets revive this thread. I know its not yet the expected time for the 4th generation time capsule to die on its users.

But update from those users, anyone out there that their time capsule already gave up recently and was included in the time capsule grave lot?

My 1TB hdd is just about full and my snow AEBS is still b/g. The Time Capsule seems to be spot on with what I need. But I am discouraged by past reports. My snow AEBS had been around since 2006 and I am spoiled by its reliability.
