Setting up a WDS network - How?

i'm running off the trinoma tomorrow to pick up an airport express and a linksys wrt54g2 router. both have wds support but can anyone talk me through the process of setting it up? i'm hooking up the linksys to the modem downstairs while the AE will be the repeater upstairs.

i've researched on steps but i'm confused with one thing - do i need to flash the linksys with custom firmware for WDS to work? i've been reading a lot about dd-wrt and how it makes WDS networks work. but then i came across a tutorial that doesn't really seem to mention dd-wrt...

help, anyone?
