    Default Controlled Internet Sharing

    hey all

    how do i control how much bandwidth is shared via the iMac's built-in Airport Express? There are times when my brother (who leeches internet bandwidth from me via wifi) uses up too much bandwidth and my own bandwidth use is slowed as a result. is there a way to define how much bandwidth i share and how much i keep for myself?

    thanks!

    also, how can we set a password for the shared internet (internet through lan, shared through airport wifi)? can't seem to find the option, if there's any.

    @mikepua: I'm not sure there's a way to do that with the default setup for an iMac. You could always shut down Internet Sharing.

    @dakilang_waiter: Systems Prefs>>Sharing. Set Share Connection from ETHERNET, to computers using AIRPORT. Click on Airport Options. Once there you can setup Network Name, Password, and Encryption Key Length

    @mikepua - what you're looking for is QoS 'quality of service' controls. Airport doesn't have it AFAIK... A handful of Dlink and Linksys routers have that, you'll have to assign either a static IP address to the user, or map his ethernet/wifi MAC ID to an IP, then apply QoS to it. You should be able to control either upload/download separately or altogether...

    mmm......an age-old practical solution: hating kapatid......you and your brother can always schedule your browsing hours. Does wonders for sibling relationships, too

    Why not just ask your brother to ease down when your browsing is effected...

    Also if you're sharing internet tru your iMac your machine would naturally "slow" down a bit as well...

    A router might help more...

    Some options:

    a) If you have dorkzoid friends, have them set up a UNIX or UNIX-like box to do Quality of Service for your network;

    b) Use a WinTel box to front for your network and use Netlimiter on it;

    c) Look up Throttled and Throttled Pro
