Best service for online games?
Alright guys. I want to help my nephew who is wants to get his first home internet connection (yeah surprising I know). He's a big online game fan and spends most of his time in internet cafes in weekends but later decided it would be more economical if he spends his time playing at home.
I have a basic myDSL (999 plan) connection at my home and he tried playing his online games on my Mac (via bootcamp). Unfortunately it seems myDSL seem to have some latency issues, and his games would lag badly. Personally I don't have problems with it since I just surf the net and email but it seems the plan is not suitable for those who play games online.
I'm totally ignorant about the technicalities of internet performance in games. Any tips or advice on what service to get would be great! TIA!

i'm in the same preidcament as you
i've yet to upgrade since 3mbps up is so pricy and i can't justify getting one when i dont utilize it for (gaming) more than an hour a day

Re: Best service for online games?
i suggest a 3mbps plan and if he wants to play online he'll have to have a wired connection, not wifi because latency/ping is high on wi-fi..
try skybroadband? i don't know any better ISP. though i'm getting pissed with my 1.5 mbps on wi-fi.

Actually, ping rate is more important than speed rate, not that I'm saying he should stick with a 384kbps plan, maybe a 1mbps plan from a reliable wired internet service provider. It depends on the area din. My home was installed with PLDT DSL just last summer and the latency is not that long, so I can play online game without any hitch (Plan 990). If your nephew is near your place, maybe he should get another ISP, but if not, he may ask friends nearby and run a pingtest or better yet, try his game on theirs.
btw, I get a constant 384kbps (48KB/s download) here at my home, maybe because our condo has a dedicated pldt switch nearby. Not fast for downloads but hell better than what SmartBro was offering back then (same speed at 999, constant but higher latency) since I left them, they upgraded to 1mbps but they are wireless so I'd shy away from them also.

Lag isn't bad on PLDT myDSL depending on what servers you are connected to. PLDT does not lag with US and Japan servers. Destiny Cable is quite bad with Japan servers.

Don't use sky cable, my world of warcraft game would boost up to 5k~10k, I can't even play, I am shifting to PLDT 3000 XCEL, as what I read before, Sky Broadband is just using proxy so it's like an internet with alot of people sharing the same address like you, sometimes thats the reason why you wanna download some stuff on rapidshare/badongo/megaupload and it says youve downloaded stuff already but actually you haven't!
Well Im not sure about it but I just read it somewhere here in PHILMUG post too, anyway I honestly say SKY IS DEFINITELY NOT GOOD FOR GAMING.
