Default Airport Extreme/Airport +Airtunes base station Users

hi my airport + airtunes died on me last weekend after about 18months of use.

how i wish apple had apple care extented warranty on the airport base stations...

but i really loved the product and am actually planning to buy the new airport extreme tomorrow.. but still have a some reservations.

has the airport died on ther philmug users right after the 1year warranty? how do you find this product in comparison with the other cheaper routers linksys ect?

i would actually turn mine off when i wasn't using it... but im under the impression that the airport basestation can be left on permenantly... anyway i just wanted to hear your thoughs and opinions from other airport base station users...

My airport extreme base station (802.11n) is always on. So is my ADSL modem. Been like that since February this year.

Hi. Mind telling us where you bought the gadget? I've been thinking of buying one but I'm afraid it'll get fried, which won't justify the very steep cost

I don't turn mine off either unless I'll be away for a few days. Mine is still new so I guess I haven't really tested its longevity.

That's expensive. Bangkok is not the best place to purchase Apple products. Try Hong Kong.

Edit: Wait, is the 10k after discount and rebate?

I'm using my 3rd AirPort Express base station in four years. I don't know how the first one got fried but it happened while I was out of the house and the maids were doing some general cleaning. Something definitely burned inside the base station because you can tell from the smell that was coming from it. The second base station that conked out on me was a base station that I installed at my parent's place. I can't explain it either. It just died and refused to power up. I tried resetting the device but it still won't work. I use both now as paperweights since all the Apple service providers tell me that once an AirPort Express unit is broken then that's it. It's ok if it's still under warranty since they'll just replace the unit but if it's not then all you can do is go out and buy another router.

I could have bought cheaper routers but I love using AirTunes and since we only have one printer and multiple Macs then it makes sense to connect the printer to the AirPort Express.

yeah my airport express died after about 18months...

if u read the ratings of the airport express/extreme on the applestore website thats like the only major complaint. the airport will die out after a year

conspiracy theorys aside i did find out that the airport base station is covered with your computer if you buy applecare. i registered both (you dont have to buy both simultaneously) when i bough applecare for my wifes macbook. the base station will be covered the whole time the applecare covers your macbook. so at least thats almost 3 years if you time your purchases right.

if i didnt find this out (actually its kind of difficult to) i wouldn't of gotten the new airport extreme.

sure the airport is expensive, but for a non techi guy like me just plugging in the airport and using the internet after 5min is worth it. especially if covered by applecare for 3 years

Mine's chugging along for the past 3 years now... maybe I'm just lucky... or maybe it helped that its connected to my office's regulated power supply/UPS.
