Proper way of connecting and disconnecting external display?

I recently got a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter for my MacBook Pro. I've been able to get it to work with our TV just by plugging it in with the MBP already running. I wonder though if there's a "proper" way to do it? Should the MBP be turned off or at least put to sleep prior to plugging in the adapter? Will hot-plugging cause any issues (like damaging the video card) for my laptop in the future?

I'd like to know if there's a proper way of disconnecting the external display too.

I've been using external displays for quite a while now and there's no need to put your mbp to sleep or do anything before you pull the adapter. Just plug /pull whenever you need it. I never had any problems so far.

same here, ive always used external displays and havent experience problems when unplugging the adapter
