Can I use my cloned imac HD with other macs?

I am about to sell my iMac and I have cloned my hard drive, can I use this clone as a (portable) boot drive on a macbook pro or macbook?

Will my softwares stil work?

yes, it will work.
just boot the other/new machine from boot manager and select your drive.
holding option upon pressing power will load the boot manager.

please note that for this to work, the clone must be boot-able, with the right partition table, guid for the current macs.

I booted on same iMac and there was a configuration pop up for Little Snitch.

Slow booting on Macbook, but loaded software seem to be still working.

None I guess..I've been transferring from my MBP, to my MBA, to an iMac, and back.

This is cool. There are just very slight differences in boot time but all bootable (backup) drives I made from Macbook, MBP, and iMac seem to be interchangeable

I noticed that some software licenses don't transfer though, they still have to be run from the native machine

Should I have used time machine instead, and restored on wherever I wanted to use it with?

Since you are transferring your apps to another machine and literally removing it on the other one. Then you can just re register it

Years ago, I remember doing something similar. I physically transferred my old Macbook's 500 gb hard disk to a 17 inch Macbook Pro and it just worked. Very surprising.

I just recently sold my daughters first gen macbook but took out her 500gb hardrive. I am now giving her my 13 inch MBP. I will then transfer the HD on the MBP to my old mini. Will that setup work?
